“Father, don’t you have at least one blessing for me?”
The voice and cry of a cheated young man desperate for his father’s blessing, his birthright!
“Please father, you cannot have only one blessing, bless me, please me! Bless me too!”
Breaking down and weeping bitterly because he understood the implication of losing out on his father’s blessing.
His father finally said:
“Your dwelling will be away from the earth’s richness, away from the dew of heaven above.
You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother.
But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck.”
-Genesis 27:39-40 NKJV
Arrgh! What a Prayer!
As the young man stormed out of his father’s presence, with venom in his veins, feeling cheated by life, he looked to hunt down his younger brother, the stealer of his blessing.
Esau had lost it ALL, the blessing was everything and Jacob had cheated him of it. He hated his brother! He said to himself:
“I will soon be mourning my father’s death. Then I will kill my brother, Jacob.”
Jacob fled for his life!
Years rolled by and Esau reminisced on his life, his choices, his loses! Oh my,his losses.
First his birthright, then his Blessing! What a life. Now life had dealt him a tough blow and his father’s prayer loomed around him, all too real not to be fulfilled.
But something about his father’s last words brought liberty to his captive soul;
“But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck.”
In the NLT translation, it reads
“But when you decide to break free, you will shake his yoke from your neck.”
He had a choice!
Today I want to talk to you about Breaking free!
“We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the trap is broken and we have escaped”.
-Psalm 127:4
Too often, we look at our background, our origin, family, upbringing, schools we attended and then conclude that this is how life will be! Just like Esau, the feeling of being cheated by life, by a loved one and then when we glance into the future all we can see are the words Isaac prayed for Esau, “Your dwelling will be away from the earth’s richness!”
But just like Esau, we have a choice.
We can choose to take the life we have been dealt and barely exist
OR
We can break free, grow restless with our present situation, shake off the limits that we have created for ourselves, look in the mirror and tell the person in there I have a choice and I choose to live life to the full, No limits, No boundaries!
It’s only then that we can propel forward and achieve greatness!
Esau’s story is not over yet!
Let us see what became of him. Genesis 33 tells us that Esau and his 400 men were coming to meet Jacob! And Jacob gave him livestock as a gift, a peace offering.
“But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
-Genesis 33:9 NLT
Esau was a nation! He had plenty. This was the same Esau that it was said of that
“Your dwelling will be away from the earth’s richness!”
He had broken loose from mediocrity.
So friend I ask
What is holding you back?
What limiting history is keeping you from having your best life?
What barrier has held you from achieving?
Were you told you will not amount to anything?
Or that all your siblings are better and more advantaged than you?
Hear me now, SHAKE IT OFF!
You can make it!
You can achieve greatness!
You can!
It’s only you that limits you!
Shake it off, press on and achieve Greatness!
